Week5 3D

GROUP EXERCISE – Challenge assumptions

15 mins Open Discussion / 10 mins Blog
1. One student presents 3D design concept to the class – 2 mins
2. Open discussion on challenging design concept assumptions – 3 mins

3. Repeat twice
4. All students blog your observations – 10 mins

Idea 1: Paul Myatt Steampunk Computer

challenging design concept assumptions
- Is it safe?

Idea 2: Cherill Hopkins Helmet Cover

challenging design concept assumptions
- How much does it cost?
- You think people will like it or they will prefer the old one?

Idea 3: Queenie presents Little Brownie, Little Trip

- How old are the reader?
- Do you think it will attract kid attention?
- Will it has a problem about printing?

PRACTICAL – Design challenge / reflect & refine

30 mins – Choose your most recent 3D design concept from all your current works
  • •  In your blog make a list of 2 assumptions about your design
  • •  Challenge both of these assumptions (100 words minimum)
  • •  Suggest 2 refinements to solve these challenges (100 words minimum)
  • •  Illustrate your thoughts with sketches / diagrams

My bottle boat

Assumption
- It might reduce the cost for make the boat
- It might work well

Challenge the assumptions
- The boat must be cheap and not heavy to make people can move it easy. The purpose for my bottle boat is using when people face with the flood. At that time, people may not have much money to buy a boat and it should be very light to make people can move it very easy.
- The bottle should work well and doesn't have problem about safety.

Solution
Making a boat by bottle, I think of course it will be very light but it also depend on other equipment that we gonna use with it. The cost of bottle should be cheap if we use used bottle to make the boat. We also have to choose the perfect bottle (no hold) to make a boat and also make it safe.

I think, a bottle boat is a good idea to reduce to cost and recycle stuff. In this video, they also try to use it at the sea. In my opinion, use it when you face with flood should be better. If you use it in the sea and when you face with the wave, it may not safe.

Q1. Relatives - A doctor in London had a brother in Manchester, who was a lawyer - but the lawyer in Manchester did not have a brother in London who was a doctor. Why?
Q2. Bottled Money - If you put a small coin piece in an empty bottle and replaced the cork, how would you get the coin out of the bottle without taking out the cork or breaking the bottle?
Q3. The Restaurant Meal - Three women each have two daughters, and they all go into a restaurant for a meal. There are only seven vacant seats in the restaurant, but each has a seat for herself. How do they manage it?

ROUP EXERCISE – Part 2: Challenge assumptions

10 mins
MIKE’S AUDITION (see handout)

1. What would be on your list of assumptions - if you were Mike?
- Traffic very busy in the morning
- He could take the bus and it might be faster
- He has to leave home around 2 or 3 in the morning
- He need to take a shower and time for dress up

2. Challenge each item in the list and find a solution to Mike’s problem
- He can get up around 1 in the morning and pack his stuff in the bag. Drive to the work place or somewhere around there. Sleep there till the morning and take a shower at work.
- Take other transport like train, helicopter and sub way.

3. Share the results and enter them in your BLOG

PRACTICAL – Design challenge / reflect & refine

40 mins – Choose your most recent 2D design concept from all your current works
  • •  In your blog make a list of 2 assumptions about your design
  • •  Challenge both of these assumptions (100 words minimum)
  • •  Suggest 2 refinements to solve these challenges (100 words minimum)
  • •  Illustrate your thoughts with sketches / diagrams

My image for background

Assumptions
- I need a background in a brown colour.
- The back ground must be this small size.
Challenge
- The background is going to be brown and it is not only one brown but also have a lot of line and design. It might be hard to make the text and text can see clearly.
- This picture is a small size but need to put it for full background.
Solution
- If the background has too many line and design, it might be hard to put the text and make it can see clearly. The solution is put other sub background in a brown color. So, all the background is still or brown colour and the text also can read easy. More over, if you put sub background, you can choose whatever colour for the text without worry about can read it or not.
- The picture is a small size, if you put it as a background in full size, it might broke. The solution is make like many images in one background.

Research

This video shows how to make a background in photoshop. It's quite a lot of technical thing for me and I don't really understand it.  But I think it might be good video for someone who already have basic skill in photoshop and want to learn more about it.

Jacob
1.  Effectiveness of design process
He did very well on the process. His process are sketch first and then put in the illustrator and also use Indesign. It's a good process that he can see the story and develop the idea very easy.
2.  Effectiveness of concept communication
His story is very clear. Not many text in the story and that makes it very to understand.

Cherill
1.  Effectiveness of design process
It's a very good process here. She is not only designs and shows the colours very obvious but she also do some test printing to look at the the colour and see hoe it work. That is a very good thing to do and I always forget about it. It can help us develop our work easier.
2.  Effectiveness of concept communication
Her helmet cover are suite for lady and I think, that's right in the colours and design. Lady like something look pretty.

Queenie
1.  Effectiveness of design process
Her process is very good here. She do some sketching first and took note about her concept. Then, use illustrator to make it. I always think that do sketching is the best way to start the process and here she did well. She is not only do it just once but also develop the idea and test in many ways.
2.  Effectiveness of concept communication
I really the way that she put the text "come on! jump in!". It makes me feel like it fun and the colour is lively. So, overall can tell the concept very obvious.

 My work
1.  Effectiveness of design process
I do took note first and then did some sketch to look what is going to look like. After that, find the pictures in the internet and use Photoshop. Actually the process I think it's good but I should use my own photos or draw the pictures.
2.  Effectiveness of concept communication
My concept is "Exhibition crack your perspective" and I think the picture is good for communication. Just  few things that I worry that people may thing that it is the exhibition about cooking!!

PRACTICAL – Design Realisation

30 mins – Develop 2D Exhibition Designs / 10 mins Blog

In my 2D exhibition design, there are some areas that I have to develop
- The pictures
I should use my own photos. I may draw the pictures or thane the pictures of the eggs in the style that I want. Then put in photoshop again.
- The texts
The texts look too small and not obvious. I should develop the texts to make it look bigger and easier to read.

Research

Here is a video making flyer by photoshop.

This a website for the flyer design inspiration. It give me the example 25 flyer design in many styles. Here are my favorite one in each style.

Cherill
1.  Effectiveness of design process
With her helmet covers. the process is very good. She did a lot of research and also talked to the experts about materials. More over, she also did some survey to get the information from people about design.
2.  Effectiveness of concept communication
In her exhibition work. There are many designs for different gender and age like for lady, man and kids. I think the design that I have seen from Cherill's design is pretty cool and can tell us very easy that she want to design it for the lady.

Queenie

1.  Effectiveness of design process
Her process is very good. She did the sketch first and then put it in the illustrator. The whole story also is put in the table to see all the plan. That's my favourite way in her work.
2.  Effectiveness of concept communication
Her concept before was about the little teddy go to supermarket and meet his friends. Actually, I like that idea but now she changes the concept to be something about Darwin. That's much better in my opinion. Her story also have a lot of picture about interesting place in Darwin. It's good for kids and also can be a guid book for tourists.

Jacob
1.  Effectiveness of design process
His Angry bird is very cute. I used to make paper marchra before and I know how it work. The process is not very complicate but need a lot of patient to make it. He found the materials around house to create art work and that's cool!
2.  Effectiveness of concept communication
His inspiration comes from his son and I think if he wants to do something for his son to have fun with it. This is a very good thing to communicate with kids. Angry bird is a popular carector and his like it. I treacly like the final result in his video that his son play with it.

My work
1.  Effectiveness of design process
I did my pop up book by sketched first and then drew the pictures. If some pictures i can't draw, I would use the photographs. After that I used photoshop to edit all picture and printed it on the paper then did pop up. There are many kinds of paper that I used. I tried to find the best paper to make pop up and I tested it many times before I did pop up.
2.  Effectiveness of concept communication
In my story is about the travelling "From Thailand to Darwin". The pop up picture and the text also about Thailand and life in Darwin. I think this thing can communicate with the reader well.

PRACTICAL – Design Realisation

In my pop up book, there are some area that I have to improve.
- The pictures
I need to draw more pictures.
- Cover page
It quite a big work on it because it is the first page. Now, I still find the idea about it.
- Pop up pages
There are 3 pages left that I have to make. I still thinking about the pictures and the design. I already sketched these pages but still need more idea because sometime when I make it, It doesn't come up like my plan. Design and type of paper are very important thing.

Research

I try to design my cover page for my pop up book and here are some websites that I did research. I want to make my cover page in a cartoon style by my drawing.
